A whopping 22.1 million international travellers — that’s how many Canada welcomed in 2019. That represents a one million increase in international visitors from the year before.
It was also from 2018 to 2019 that the Great White North admitted 313,580 immigrants. That’s one of the highest-ever recorded permanent residency admissions throughout the nation’s history.
Of the 2019 Canada PR visa holders, 80,685 were Indians. That’s more than twice the count of 39,340 PR card-bearing Indians in 2016.
All these highlights how welcoming Canada is to those who would like to immigrate to the country. So much so that the Government has made the Canada PR process pretty straightforward.
The question now is, how exactly does the process work and what does it entail? What sort of requirements do you need to qualify?
We will answer all these burning questions below, so be sure to read on!
A Primer on the Canada PR Visa
A Canadian PR visa is a document proving that a person has permanent resident status. PR visa holders are still citizens of other countries, but they have immigrated to Canada. This gives them the right to live and work in the country, as well as apply for citizenship in the future.
Keep in mind that a permanent resident is different from a foreign worker or one who has a student visa. The latter is in Canada on a temporary basis. Meaning, they can only stay in the country for a pre-set period of time.
A PR, on the other hand, can live on a permanent basis in the Great White North. However, they still need to satisfy permanent residency obligations. One of these is being physically present in Canada for no less than 730 days within a five-year period.
An Overview of the Canada Permanent Residency Programs
Canada is a top destination for Indians because it offers numerous ways to immigrate. There’s Express Entry, Provincial Nomination, Start-Up Visa, Self-Employment, and a few others. You can also become a Canadian PR through Family Sponsorship.
Express Entry is one of the most popular methods though, as it’s an online application system. Skilled workers can apply for permanent residency through this system. Meaning, you can apply for Canadian PR right from India!
The Canada PR Visa Process: The Steps Involved
Applying for Canadian PR takes more work than applying for a visa to visit Canada. Also, since you’re applying for permanent residency, there are more requirements involved.
To help you get started, here’s your step-by-step guide on how to get a Canadian PR visa.
- Determine Which Canadian Permanent Residency Program You’re Eligible For
Canada PR eligibility factors depend on the type of immigration method you choose. If you go with Express Entry, for instance, you would need to have taken a language test for English or French. You would then have to submit the test results as part of your PR application requirements.
Most PR programs, however, factor in the applicant’s age, education, and work experience. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada also looks into the applicant’s character background. The IRCC will then base the programs that the applicant is eligible for on these factors.
- Satisfy the Minimum Requirements
Let’s say you would want to immigrate to Canada as a skilled worker through the Express Entry Program. In this case, you have the three economic immigration programs to choose from:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program
- Federal Skilled Trades Program
- Canadian Experience Class
All three require English or French skills. They also require a Canadian or foreign experience in a National Occupational Classification. The previous work experience required varies between one and two years.
Keep in mind that these are only the basic requirements for Express Entry. Each immigration program has its own set of requirements, so be sure to check what applies in your case.
- Prepare Your Documents
Aside from the language test results, you’d also need to have a valid passport or travel document. For Express Entry, you would also need an education residential assessment report. To apply for a Federal Skilled Trades Program, you must have a written job offer from a Canadian employer.
- Online Application and Profile Creation
To apply for a PR visa through Express Entry, you would first need to complete an online application form. You’ll answer a few questions, which the IRCC will use to determine your eligibility.
If they find you eligible, you’ll receive an official invitation. This includes detailed instructions, as well as a link to create an Express Entry profile. This is where you’ll provide your personal information.
Once you submit the online profile, you’ll become part of the pool of Express Entry candidates. You’ll then go through a ranking process, based on a points system. These points will come from the information you’ve provided in your profile.
- Wait for an Invitation to Apply for Permanent Residency
Express Entry visa applicants with the highest-ranking scores will get another invitation. This time, the invite is to apply for permanent residency. If you receive this, you have 60 days to wrap up your application.
