How to get a PR visa in Australia? (Step-by-step process)

Applying for an Australian residence is a legal process under the Australian migration law.

Steps to get an Australian PR visa:

Step 2: English Language test

Australian immigration authorities accept scores from various English proficiency Tests like IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, etc. Take one of them. You must obtain at least 6 out of 9 in the IELTS test.

Step 3: Skill assessment

Get your skills assessed by the Skills assessment authority that checks if your skills, education and work experience are based on Australian standards. This process usually takes 2 to 3 months.

Step 4: Expression of Interest (EOI)

Fill an online application for an Expression of Interest (EOI) on Australia’s Skill Select website.

The SkillSelect program offers three visa categories to apply for a PR visa:

Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189 (Permanent Residence Visa)

Skilled Nominated Visa 190 (Permanent Residence Visa)

Skilled regional (provisional) Subclass 491 (Temporary Visa with a 5 year validity. Can be converted to a PR visa)

If you are applying through the state nominated visa, you have to apply for a nomination from a state government. It usually takes up to 1 month to get a decision on this.

Step 5: Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)

If your application meets all the requirements , you will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for the Australia PR.

Step 6: Submit your PR application

You must submit your PR application within 60 days and include all the supporting documents.

Step 7: Medical and Police clearance certificates

You and your dependants will have to mandatorily abide by the health and character requirements by the Australian Embassy. Generally, the government will ask you to submit a police clearance certificate of places you have lived in for more than 12 months.

Step 8: Get your PR visa

Once you receive confirmation of visa approval, you have 6 months to migrate to the country.

Basic eligibility requirements for an Australian PR include:

  • Age: Your age should be below 45 years to apply for a PR visa
