A majority of countries nowadays follow a standardized process to assess the applications for immigration. Language proficiency test is one such major criteria for evaluating the applications. IELTS is a widely accepted test that many countries rely on. Read on to know everything about the IELTS exam and how to prepare for it.

What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is the most popular English language test for the last 25 years.

Depending upon the path of immigration, there can be two different types of IELTS test.

  1. General Training or GT: This test is the one for people immigrating overseas permanently or for work. On the other hand,
  2. Academic IELTS: This test is conducted for candidates who aspire to study from a foreign university or college.

The exam is recognized by more than 60,000 organizations across the globe, including immigration authorities, employers, universities, professional organizations, and many more.

Here are the 4 sections of the IELTS Exam:

The listening part of the IELTS exam lasts for 30 minutes. There are four sections in the exam, and it includes a total of 40 questions for one mark each. The candidate has to listen to four different recordings and then answer questions on the basis of the conversations. It assesses the candidate’s ability to understand the English language and comprehend detailed factual information.

In the reading part of the exam, the candidate has to read long texts or extracts and then answer questions on the basis of these texts. This module lasts for one hour, and then the candidate has to answer 40 questions for one mark each. The reading part of the IELTS exam is different for General Training (GT) and Academic.

The writing part of the test assesses the candidate’s ability to express personal opinions and also the understanding of a particular stance, both informal and formal. It consists of two tasks, and the candidate must complete them within 60 minutes. For the Academic exam, it can include a graphical representation and an essay. In the case of the GT exam, the first task is a letter and the second one is an essay task.

The last section of speaking comprises three different sections, and it lasts for about 11-15 minutes. It proves the candidate’s ability to conduct a face-to-face conversation and express their ideas with clarity.

Who Conducts the IELTS Test?

IELTS is owned and conducted by two organizations – IDP and British Council.

IDP or International Development Program is a global educational institution, while the British Council is a UK based organization that specializes in educational opportunities and international culture.

While these two institutions jointly manage the test, it is designed by Cambridge University.

Both the organizations conduct the same test on the same date to maintain uniformity. There is no difference in the marking system as well.

Which Countries Accept IELTS Scores?

The score of the IELTS exam is a valid indicator of language proficiency for many countries all around the globe. It is accepted for various visa categories.

Here are some of the countries that will accept your immigration application with IELTS:

  • Canada
  • USA
  • UK
  • Ireland
  • New Zealand
  • Australia

What is the Minimum IELTS Score Required for Immigration?

To determine the candidate’s language proficiency, the candidate gets points in each of the four sections of the exam.

All the scores of the IELTS exam are converted into bands between 0 and 9. A candidate can get a 0.5 band score as well.

While a candidate scoring band 9 in any module proves that they are expert at the language, the bands decrease with reduced proficiency.

Here is how the examiners give bands for different modules:
