Indian expatriates top the ‘Educated Migrants’ list in rich countries

As per data revealed by OECD, about 120 million migrants live in the organization’s member states. 

Highly Educated Migrants

Of these, almost 30 - 35% of migrants are considered highly educated. They have either undergone vocational or academic training. These numbers are a lot higher among the most common birth countries for higher educated migrants.

India at the Forefront

With more than 3 million highly educated migrants in OECD countries, India is at the forefront of the 2015-2016 list released lately. China comes second with over 2.25 million highly educated immigrants.  

  • Indians have garnered almost 65% share of the granted high education status.
  • China accounted for 48.6% share of highly educated migrants in the OECD countries.

The Phillippines ranked 3rd behind the Indians and the Chinese.

Professionals in Demand

According to the International Labour Organization, most of the high skilled in-demand migrants to OECD countries and elsewhere are professionals associated with healthcare.

Headquartered in Paris, France, the OECD is an intergovernmental economic organization established on 30th September 1961. With 37 member countries, it aims to strengthen economic cooperation and world trade.

India is a non-member but has working economic relationships with OECD member countries. The cooperation between India and OECD dates back to 1995. Plenty of ground has been covered since then.
