IRCC Says, No Medical Exam For Canada Residence Applicants

Published on : October 17, 2022

The Canada Government decided to drop the medical examination for around 1,80,000 applicants. Sean Fraser, the Minister of Canada Immigration said that applicants who are already in Canada do not have to undergo a medical test. This new policy is applicable till 6 October 2024.

What are the criteria to meet the new policy?

  • A new or pending visa applicant of temporary or permanent residence from within Canada.
  • Applicants who underwent Canada's Immigration Medical Test within the last 5 years.

Sean Fraser tweets, “Improving and strengthening our immigration system benefits us all. As of today, permanent and temporary residence applicants who are already in Canada and meet certain criteria are exempt from immigration medical examinations”

The temporary policy is an official update from IRCC to exempt certain low risk for in-Canada, foreign nationals.

The IRCC medical exam takes around four weeks to process the results from the date of appointment. This temporary public policy allows eligible foreign nationals to get faster residence.

The applicants who do not meet the criteria must take the medical exam and submit the results along with the application. Yet, IRCC will contact the individuals to explain the further steps if they are not eligible for this exemption.

There is an unprecedented interest in Canada from applicants across the world. Thus, IRCC commits to heightening the bar for the immigration process. The new public policy of eliminating medical exams is part of the commitment. This will allow processing for low-risk applicants and ensures better client service. It also manages public health risks on the other side.

In the past, IRCC came up with two similar public policies between May 2021 and March 2022. It has eliminated the need for a second IME. As a result, there were cost savings and a faster visa process. The policies benefited 85,000 low-risk applicants. Now, with this new policy, IRCC wants to target 1,80,000 applicants to be at benefit.
