1. Canada’s New Category-Based Selection Introduced

Canada will now hold 3 different kinds of Express Entry draws. Earlier, all-program and program-specific draws were held. A new selection criteria based on specific categories introduced. Category-based selection for Express Entry Canada PR visas will be to choose permanent residents with skilled work experience in priority jobs.

Express Entry is a popular way to gain Canadian permanent residence. There is a processing standard of 6 months from the submission of complete application. Express Entry draws are held by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

6 categories have been selected by IRCC for 2023. A total of 82 jobs are eligible for category-based selection.

So far, 7 category-specific Express Entry draws have been held in 2023, with 10,900 invitations issued.

2. Australia to Soon have a Canada–like Points–Based Immigration System

Australia already has a points-based system for selecting migrants. Proposed changes in Australian immigration will make the Land Down Under more attractive for temporary foreign workers exploring options for work overseas.

New migration policies are expected to be implemented soon. The overhauled Australian points-based system will be closely-modeled on the Canadian points-based immigration system.

3. Indian PG students will get 5-year Post-study Visa in France, PM Modi Announced

Indian nationals studying abroad in France - for a Master’s Degree - will now be granted a 5-year post-study visa. With the latest update, Indian Master’s students can remain in France for a much longer time after completing their studies in the country.

The news was shared by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. He was speaking in Paris while addressing the Indian community.

4. 9,600 Canada PR visa invitations sent in July 2023

A total of 6 Express Entry draws were held with 9,600 invitations to apply issued by IRCC under the Express Entry system.

Candidates who received invitations were those with -

  • French-language proficiency: 6,100 (3800 in EE Draw #258 + 2,300 in EE Draw # 256)
  • Healthcare as their occupation: 1,500 (in EE Draw #255)
  • Jobs in STEM occupations: 500 (in EE Draw #254)
  • Eligible for any 1 of the 3 Express Entry program: 1,500 (800 in all-program EE Draw #257 +700 in EE Draw #253)

While 2 were all-program draws, the other 4 were category based.

5. Canada’s Tech Talent Strategy: 10,000 H-1B To Get 3-Year Open Work Permit

The Tech Talent Strategy of Canada is aimed at bringing in and retaining global talent. Open work permit stream specifically for H1-B specialty occupation visa holders has been introduced.

The new Canada work permits for H-1B visa holders were made available from July 16, 2023.
