1. Migrate to Australia with a Skilled Visa

Skilled Migration Pathways in Australia:

  • Subclass 189

Subclass 189 or the Skilled Independent Visa is a Permanent Residency visa that lets you settle in Australia without a job offer or state sponsorship.

The main requirement for this visa is a positive skill assessment report and good English proficiency. Since the eligibility criteria for this visa type is minimal, it is a popular choice amongst foreign-nationals.

  • Subclass 190

Subclass 190 or the Skilled Nominated Visa is also a Permanent Residency Visa that lets you settle and work in Australia indefinitely. However, as the name suggests, this visa requires the applicant to have a state nomination to be eligible to apply for the visa.

  • Subclass 482

This visa lets employers address labour shortages by bringing in skilled workers from across the globe to fill the appropriate vacancies in Australia’s job economy. With the Subclass 482 or the Temporary Skill Shortage visa, you can stay in Australia for a maximum of 4 years.

2. Apply for Skills Assessment

The combined list of eligible skilled occupations sets out all relevant occupations under 4 occupation lists:

  1. ANZSCO(Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations)
  2. STSOL(Short-term Skilled Occupation List)
  3. ROL(Regional Occupation List)
  4. RSMS(Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme)

Most occupations in each list have their own skills assessing authority. The Department of Home Affairs only accepts a skills assessment report issued by the relevant assessing authority.

  • It is your responsibility to contact the relevant assessing authority for your occupation and obtain a skills assessment if required.
  • Each assessing authority has its own assessment procedures, timeframes and charges.
  • Obtaining a suitable skills assessment is mandatory for some visa subclasses (and streams) and may be requested for others.
  • You should read all of the available information about the visa you are interested in applying for.
  • This will allow you to determine if you need to submit a skills assessment and when you need to obtain it.
